Genotypic and Phenotypic Correlations Among Growth Traits in Two Selected Strains of Indigenous Turkey (Meleagris Gallopavo) In Zaria, Nigeria

The study was conducted to estimate the genotypic and phenotypic correlations of growth traits in two selected strains of indigenous turkey in Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria. A total of 18 adult turkeys (6 toms and 12 hens) were used to form two breeding groups of black and white strain, 90 poults were produced from their eggs as the first generation (G1). At 8 weeks, 6 toms and 12 hens with high weight were selected as the parents of G2 while others were maintained as control group. Body weight and six linear body measurements were taken at adult age in both generations. SAS package was used to estimate variance and covariance components. The results revealed positive phenotypic correlations that ranged from low to high in G1 (0.080-0.869 and 0.099-0.860) and high all in G2 (0.539-0.992 and 0.538-0.940) between two strains, respectively. Similarly, positive genotypic correlation that ranged from low to high (0.023-0.634 and 0.009-0.432) in G1 and (0.291-0.725 and 0.211-0.743) in G2 in white and black strains. Higher relationship observed among growth traits measured in G2 compared to G1 shows that selection for increased 8-weeks body weight increased the magnitude of relationship between traits. Positive and High correlations observed between body weight and most of the morphometric traits shows that, morphometric traits can be used to predict body weight and be included in genetic selection to increased growth performance of turkeys.
