Prevalence of Tick-Borne Haemoparasites of cattle in Plateau State Nigeria
Abstract
This study was undertaken to determine the occurrence of Haemoparasites in cattle at Garkawa, Plateau state, Nigeria. A total of 150 animals were sampled for the study. Characteristics of the population such as Age, sex, body Score Condition were determined by visual assessment and recorded for each sample throughout the sampling period. Blood samples were randomly collected through the jugular veins of 150 animals of both sexes into well labelled sample bottles containing EDTA and immediately transported to Parasitology Laboratory of National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI) Vom for haemotological and parasitic screening. The results showed the haemoparasite occurrence in the female (76%) and males (74%) did not differ significantly (p>0.05), indicating that infection can occur in these animals irrespective of sex. On the basis of age, the young had significantly (P< 0.05) higher haemoparasite infection than the adults (17.8 vs 6.8%) Body condition score and packed cell volume between the non-infected and infected animals also differed significantly (P<0.05). The non-infected had higher body score and PCV (689.39s 67.97 and 25.94 4.90) than infected (511.80 48.50 and 17.47 2.48) indicating that these parasites negatively affect the body score and PCV in the infected animals. Haemoparasites identified were Babesia, Anaplasma and Theileria Spp. The study concluded that the animals suffered some level of haemoparasitic burdens and suggested regular deticking with suitable acaricide and treatment with recommended anti-protozoan alongside adequate feeding and feed supplements to boost their immunity.
