Relationship among Body Morphometric Traits, Milk Yield and Milk Composition of West African Dwarf Does of different Parities

Abstract

This study examined the relationship among selected body morphometric traits (BMTs), milk yield, milk compositions and lactation stage of West African Dwarf (WAD) does.  A total of 24 lactating does in first, second and third parities were used for the study. The does were milked for a period of 16 weeks during which BMTs, milk yield and milk compositions were recorded. The BMTs studied were body length (BL), body girth (BG), height at withers (HW), rump height (RH), head length (HDL), distance between legs (DBL) and neck circumference (NC). Collected data were subjected to Pearson’s correlation using Minitab statistical software, version 17. The results of the study revealed that milk yield of the does was negative and significantly (P<0.05) correlated with lactation stage in multiparous (2nd and 3rd parity) does, while lactation stage had a significant (P<0.05) relationship with milk fat in all the does, and only milk protein in primiparous does. The result also revealed that higher number of BMTs were positive and significantly (P<0.05) correlated with milk yield (BG: r=0.419; HW: r= 0.387; RH: r= 0.501; NC: r= 0.450) in does that were in 3rd parity compared with does in 1st and 2nd parities. Body morphometric traits had significant (P<0.05) relationship with more milk compositions in 1st parity does compared to multiparous does. The study concluded that morphometric traits had dissimilar relationship with milk yield and milk composition across WAD does of different parities. It is therefore recommended that the use of morphometric traits for selecting WAD goats for milk yield and milk composition could be based on parity.
