Growth Performance, Carcass Characteristics and Financial Benefit of Broiler Chickens Fed Dietary Levels of Maize Milling Waste as Replacement for Maize

Abstract

A forty-two (42) day experiment was conducted to evaluate the growth performance, carcass characteristics and financial benefits of broiler chickens fed dietary levels of maize milling waste (MMW) as replacement for maize. Five diets were formulated in which MMW replaced maize at 0, 10, 15, 20 and 25% coded as diets 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 respectively. A total of four hundred and forty (440) broiler chicks were randomly allotted into five dietary treatment groups in a completely randomized design. Each treatment contained eighty-eight (88) broiler chicks replicated four times with 22 birds per replicate. The highest final weight (2331.10 g) and total weight gain (1979.09 g) were obtained from the group on diet 4, which did not vary from those on diets 1, 2 and 3, but significantly (P<0.05) higher than those fed diet 5. The performance at the starter phase were similar. At the finisher phase, daily weight gain (DWG) was significantly (P<0.05) higher for the groups on diets 4 and 1. These values were however similar to those on diets 2 and 3, whereas the lowest value was on diet 5 which also had the poorest feed conversion ratio (FCR) of 3.49. The overall performance revealed that daily feed intake (104.22 – 108.59 g) and DWG (40.65 – 44.42 g) were not affected, whereas the best FCR of 2.31 was on diet 1 and similar to those on diets 2, 3 and 4, while the poorest FCR was on diet 5. Most of the carcass parameters measured were not influenced by the dietary levels of MMW except for weight of legs, abdominal fat and liver. Abdominal fat weight tended to decrease with increasing level of MMW, with lowest value of 0.38% on diet 5. Feed cost per kilogram gain was lowest on diet 4 for both finisher (N236.62) and overall (N220.81) phases. It was concluded that maize milling waste can replace maize at up to 20% level without compromising growth performance, carcass yield and reduction in feed cost.
