Nutrient intake and Growth Performance of Sheep Fed Graded Levels of Soya Bean Waste in a Total Mixed Ration

Abstract

The experiment was conducted to evaluate the growth performance, apparent nutrient digestibility and nitrogen balance of sheep fed graded levels of soya bean waste in a total mixed ration. The diets were 1, 2, 3 and 4 containing 0, 50, 75 and 100% levels of soya bean waste respectively, substituting cotton seed cake in the ration. Four (4) rams with an average weight of 28.9 ± 1kg were used in this study. The animals were weighed and randomly assigned to four (4) metabolic cages in a 4× 4 Latin square arrangement. Each period lasted for fifteen days, ten days for adoption and five days for collection. There were significant differences (P<0.05) in dry matter intake, weight gain and fed conversion ratio among the treatments with superiority in treatment T2 (50% SBW). The apparent nutrient digestibility and nitrogen balance has significant (P<0.05) effects in most of the groups with inconsistence as per nutrient. The study concluded that feeding graded levels of soya bean waste in the diet of sheep had better performance with positive nutrient digestibility and nitrogen balance hence, 50% inclusion level is recommended.
