Morphological Characterization of Indigenous Breeds of Goat (Capra hircus) in Kano State
Abstract
This research was conducted to morphologically characterize four indigenous breeds of goats (Red Sokoto; RS, Kano Brown; KB, Sahelian; SHL and West Africa Dwarf; WAD) in Kano state in relation to location, sex, breeds and age. Body weight(kg) and fourteen morphometric measurements(cm) viz; body length (BL), Head circumference (HC), Tail Length (TL), Hip Height (HH), Neck Length (NL), Ear Length (EL), Horn Length (HL), Wither Height (WH), Canon Length (CL), Chest Depth (CD), Face Length (FL), Gonadal Length (GL), Gonadal Circumference (GC) and Heart Girth (HG) were measured on the three hundred and seventy-four adult goats from eight selected locations in Kano State. Body weight was measured in kilograms using a weighing scale and morphometric traits with a measuring tape. The Data from the morphometric traits were entered in the Microsoft excel package and subjected to Analysis of Variance using the General Linear Model procedure of SAS. Significant means where applicable were separated with Duncan Multiple Range Tests of the same software. The body weight and morphometric traits were significantly (P<0.01) affected by the factors. The interaction effect of sex and age had significant (P<0.01) effect on all the morphometric traits measured. The results showed the presence of wide morphological and phenotypic variations within and among the indigenous breeds of goat. The rich adaptable morphological traits could be exploited for future goat improvement programmes.
