Growth Performance of Broiler Chickens Fed Diets Containing Graded Levels of Moringa oleifera Leaf Meal as a Replacement for Maize Offal

The study was conducted to evaluate the performance of broiler chickens fed diets containing proportions of maize Offal (MO) and Moringa oleifera leaf (MOLM) in their diets at Teaching and Research Farm, Bayero University Kano. Day old broiler chicks (Arbor Acre) totalling one hundred and fifty (150) were used for the experiment. They were fed on commercial diet for the period of one week during physiological adjustment. Thereafter, they were randomly selected and allocated to five dietary treatment groups. Each treatment contained thirty (30) birds and replicated 3 times with ten (10) birds per replicate in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The experimental diets were T1 (30%MO/0.0%MOL), T2 (22.5%MO/7.5%MOL), T3 (15.0%MO/15.0%MOL), T4 (7.5%MO/22.5%MOL) and T5 (0.0%MO/30%MOL). Data on feed intake were recorded on a daily basis while weight gain was measured on weekly basis for the period of eight (8) weeks. The results showed that final live weight, total weight gain, daily weight gain and feed conversion ratio (FCR) differed significantly (P<0.05) across the dietary treatments. Birds fed T1 recorded the highest daily weight gain (26.51 g) and recorded better FCR (2.46) than the other treatments, while those on T5 had the lowest daily weight gain (15.19 g) and FCR (4.38). Based on the results obtained, it can be concluded that inclusion of Moringa oleifera Leaf Meal (MOLM) at 22.50% improved performance in broiler chickens. Further research should be conducted to determine the processing method that can support the performance of broiler chickens at higher inclusion without adverse effects.
