Abstract

The nutrient digestibility and haematological parameters of broiler finisher chickens fed diets containing differently processed Balanite aegyptiaca fruit meal (BAFM) was evaluated. Raw BAFM was processed by soaking, boiling, roasting and fermentation. The durationfor soaking and fermentation was96 hours while boiling and roasting were for 60 minutes each. Raw and processed samples were analysed for proximate compositions and anti-nutritional factors. A total of Three hundred and fifteen (315) broiler finisher chickens (Ross strain} were assigned to five dietary treatments each replicated thrice with twenty one (21) chickens per replicate. Soaked, boiled, roasted and fermented BAFM were included in diets for treatments two up to five, respectively at 20% level of inclusion. At the end of the finisher phase, apparent nutrient digestibility and haematological parameters were determined from two chickens randomly selected per replicate. Processing of BAFM showed remarkable reduction in anti-nutritional factors. Apart from chickens fed the control diet, apparent digestibility of dry matter, crude protein and crude fibre were significantly (P<0.05) better in chickens fed soaked BAFM based diet. The poorest results were obtained for chickens fed fermented BAFM based diet. Haematological parameters of chickens in all treatments were within the range for healthy chickens. The study concluded that processed BAFM can be incorporated in broiler diet at 20% level of inclusion.
