Long-Time Feed Withdrawal Effect on the Performance and Cost Benefits of Broiler Production

Abstract

Performance and feed cost benefit of the one hundred, day old broiler chicks under off feeding were evaluated. Initial body weight (IBW), Final body weight (FBW), daily body weight (DWG), weekly Feed intake (WFI), feed conversation ratio (FCR) and mortality rate were the parameters considered for the performance. Shank length (SK), Breast circumstance (BC), body length (BL), Neck length (NL), thigh length (THL) and thigh circumference (THC) were morphological traits considered. The Final body weight (FBW), Daily weight gain (DWG), Weekly feed intake (WFI) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were significantly (P<0.05) affected by feed withdrawal. High FBW (2.58±0.05) and 2.52±0.05 was observed in the four and six hour groups. Weekly weight gain (WWG) was not significant (P<0.05). Birds fed ad libitum consumed more feed (727.00±3.70). Morphological traits were significantly (P<0.05) different. Restricted groups had a better feed conversion ratio of 2.48±0.46, 2.47±0.46 and 2.43±0.46 at two, four and six hours, respectively. Six hours restricted group had low estimates of total cost of feed/birth (1414.30±4.61) and (cost/kg weight gain) 1152.00±2.00. In conclusion, birds subjected to feed withdrawal for six hours observed high final body weight, low total cost of feed/birth and cost/kg weight gain.
