Nutrient Digestibility, Haematological and Serum Biochemical Indices of Growing Yankasa Rams fed Graded Levels of Acacia (Faidherbia albida) Pods Based Diets

Abstract

The study was conducted to investigate the response of Yankasa rams fed graded levels of Faidherbia albida pods-based diets on nutrient digestibility and haemato-biochemical parameters. Complete diets containing 16% CP were prepared for the trials with dry F. albida incorporated into the diets at 0 (control), 7.5, 15, 22.5, and 30% and designated as treatment 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5%, respectively. Twenty (25) Yankasa rams were used for the experiment with an average initial body weight of 16.72kg and randomly allocated to five treatment groups of five animals each in completely randomized designed. During the 90 days experimental period, rams were fed experimental diets and water ad-libitum. The results of the study revealed significant (P<0.05) difference in dry matter intake and nutrient digestibility. Animals fed diet 5 recorded highest dry matter (916.56 g/d) while those fed diet 1 with the least (684.39 g/d). Difference in digestibility parameters were recorded across the treatments with treatment 5 having the highest dry matter, CP and neutral detergent fibre digestibility (75.66, 86.01, and 74.12%) while treatment 1 was the least (53.94, 63.66, and 46.93%) respectively. Normal haematological and biochemical parameters were recorded. It may therefore be concluded that inclusion of F. albida pods in diets had no detrimental effect on nutrient digestibility, haematological and biochemical parameters of rams. It is therefore be recommended that up to 30% of F. albida pods may be included in the diets of growing Yankasa rams.
