Effect of Crude Onion Extract on Growth Performance and Cost Benefit Analysis of Broiler Chickens
Abstract
The study investigated the effect of onion extract on growth performance and cost benefit analysis of broiler chickens. A total of one hundred and fifty (150) (mixed sex) day old Abor acre strain of broiler chicks were use in the study. The study lasted for the period of eight (8) weeks. The chickens were randomly assigned to five dietary treatments with thirty (30) birds per treatment. Each group was replicated three times with 10 birds per replicate in a completely randomized design (CRD). The onion extract was supplied to the birds via drinking water at graded levels of 0.00 (control), 0.25, 0.50, 0.75% and 1.00% corresponding to T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5 respectively. The results of growth performance in the study showed that there were significant (P<0.05) differences among the treatment groups in all the parameters measured except initial body weight was not significantly (P>0.05) affected. The result for growth performance revealed that T3 had the highest final body weight gain (1602.80g) and daily weight gain (38.16g) while the lowest value was recorded in T1. The highest feed intake and feed conversion ratio was recorded in T3 and T4while the least was observed in T2 and T5 for feed intake and feed conversion ratio respectively. Feed cost per kg (₦/kg) was ₦122 for all the treatments. Total feed cost was lowest in T4 while the poorest was recorded in T1 (control) and T3 (0.50% onion extract). The study concluded that onion extract has positive effect on growth performance of broiler chickens and 1.00% concentration is most economical cost per unit of weight gain was observed in onion extract.
