Effect of Plumage Colour on Egg Characteristics of Fulani Local Chickens
The study was conducted to determine the effect of plumage colour on egg production and egg quality characteristics of Fulani local chicken ecotype. Five plumage colours; black, ash, brown, white and yellow were identified in the study. The birds were housed individually in battery cages according to their plumage colour and eggs collected for a period of three (3) months. Data were collected on egg number, hen-day (HDP) and hen-housed egg production (HHP) as well as external and internal egg quality traits. Data collected were subjected to one-way analysis variance using SPSS statistical software. The results obtained indicated that, plumage colour had significant (P<0.05) effect on egg production at first month of lay. White plumage birds had significantly (P<0.05) higher egg number, hen-day and hen-housed egg production compared to other plumages. Black, brown and ash plumage birds had similar egg number while yellow plumage colour had the least. As observed in egg production, plumage colour had significant (P<0.05) effect on most egg quality parameters except egg length, egg shape index, albumen height and York width. Black plumage birds had significantly (P<0.05) higher egg weight (41.44±0.81 g), egg width (3.90±0.02 cm), egg shape index (79.91±1.03) and egg shell thickness (45.44±1.33mm), followed by yellow and ash coloured birds. However, brown plumage birds had significantly (P<0.05) higher albumen length (8.25±0.17 cm) while black plumage had the lowest albumen length (7.12±0.14 cm). Yellow, black and white plumage birds had statistically similar albumen height (0.64±0.04, 0.63±0.09 and 0.58±0.03 cm). Birds with white plumage colour had significantly (P<0.05) higher Haugh unit (27.16±2.10) compared to other plumage colours. From the finding of this research, white plumage Fulani chickens is recommended for commercial egg production due to its high egg production.
