Economically Empowering Women Groups within Rano Local Government in Yoghurt Production
One hundred questionnaires were distributed to one hundred households in order to assess socio-economic aspects and to select financially capable individuals that will be trained to make yoghurt from fermented cows’ milk (nono). Furthermore, thirty rural women leaders purposely selected from the answered questionnaires that were distributed in Rano town, Rano LGA of Kano State, were trained on how to make yoghurt using nono and other readily available substances. Simple descriptive statistics was used to analyse and describe the data collected. Majority of the farmers had poor knowledge of improved yoghurt processing prior to this project. Profitability analysis of the project showed that a margin of N 2, 500 was realised which indicated the profitable nature of the venture and its potential to improve income of women farmers in the study area. Farmers should therefore adopt the yoghurt processing technology for increased income and reduction on wastage of the product. Awareness campaigns should be carried out by extension agencies on milk processing. Government should intervene in areas of inputs, storage and marketing for improved yoghurt processing in the study area.
