Influence of disease outbreak initiator on livelihood of small-holder poultry farmers in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria.

Poultry farming supply quality animal protein which is the most valuable component of human diet. Its significant contributions in livestock industry are limited by disease outbreak. This study assessed the influence of disease outbreak initiator on poultry Small-holder farmers’ livelihood in Ogun State. A multistage sampling procedure was used in selection of 67 respondents from two communities in Abeokuta North Local Government Area of Ogun state. Data were collected through administration of interview guide and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results obtained showed that respondents’ mean age, farming experience, number of birds and household size were 43years, 11years, 41birds and 4 persons respectively. Findings show that 86.6% and 13.4% of respondents had experienced disease outbreak on their farms during rainy and dry season period. Furthermore, 43.6% and 32.8% had experienced disease outbreak among birds between 1-3 and 4-6weeks old respectively. Poor sanitation (71.6%), late change of litter (67.2%), frequent changes in feed type due to inaccessibility (59.7%), late vaccination of birds (40.2%) and source(s) of day old chicks (37.3%) were management practices identified by respondents as disease outbreak initiators. Reduction in household income (85.1%) and number of birds (46.3%) were the influence of disease outbreak on their livelihood. Poor sanitation of poultry house and its environment (χ2=33.220, df =4, p=0.000), untimely culling of sick birds (χ2=20.883, df=1, p=0.001) and late changes of litter (χ2=7.800, df=2, p=0.02) were significantly associated with disease outbreak. Conclusively, good management practices are efficient disease outbreak control. The study recommends regular training of small poultry farmers by the extension workers subject matter specialists
