Haematological Profile of Weaner Rabbits fed Diets Containing Raw and boiled Roselle Seed (Hibiscus sabdarffa L.) Meal
An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of boiled roselle seed meal (BRSM) based diets fed to growing rabbits. A total of thirty (30) weaner rabbits of mixed breeds and both sexes aged 7-8 weeks (800 ± 0.76 g) old were randomly allotted into five (5) dietary treatments with three (3) replicates of three rabbits each in a completely randomized design. Five experimental diets were formulated with the roselle free diet as the control (T1), the raw roselle seed as T2 and those seeds boiled per batch for 15, 30 and 45 minutes as T3, T4 and T5, respectively. The experiment lasted for 56 days. Blood samples were collected from three rabbits randomly selected from each treatment at the end of the study for haematological evaluations. Results revealed no significant differences (P>0.05) in all parameters measured except for haemoglobin and lymphocytes (P< 0.05). Haemoglobin concentration for rabbits on T5 (13.07g/dl) was similar to those on the control (12.87g/dl). Lymphocytes values were significantly affected (P<0.05) with T4 having the least (49.33) mean. It is concluded from this experiment that rabbits could tolerate raw and boiled roselle seeds meals (15, 30 and 45 minutes) in their diets without adverse effect on some haematological parameters (Haemoglobin and lymphocytes).
