Feed Quality of Silage made fromForage Sorghum (Sorghum almum Parodi) and Lablab (Lablab purpureus L. Sweet) in Shika, Nigeria
Abstract
An experiment was conducted at Feeds and Nutrition Research Programme, National Animal Production Research Institute, Shika, to investigate the feed quality of forage sorghum and lablab mixed silages. Silage was prepared by harvesting forage sorghum and lablab at dough and flowering stages, respectively, chopped to 2 cm with forage chopper, wilted for 24 hour and made into the following four treatments containing forage sorghum and lablab at 100:0, 90:10, 80:20 and 70:30 mixed ratios. The silage materials were placed in polyethene bags and ensiled in a four partitioned pit silo measuring 10 m length x10 m width x 6 m height. The silages were opened after 21 days for physical and chemical analysis. Mixed silage of forage sorghum and lablab produced was highly acidic with pH from 3.72-4.86. The highest acid pH (3.72), yellow green colour, very sweet aroma and very firm texture were obtained from silage prepared of 70 % forage sorghum and 30 % lablab. The dry matter, crude protein, crude fibre and Nitrogen free extract ranges from (44.7- 60.10 %), (6.34-10.10 %), (24.75-39.55%) and (16.77-32.55%) respectively. the highest crude protein value (10.10 %) was obtained from 70:30 silage mixture. The values of crude fibre observed were not significantly (P>0.05) different except in 80:20 silage mixtures. Highest NFE value was obtained from treatment that had 80:20 silage mixtures. There was linear relationship in the calcium and phosphorus contents of all the silages as the inclusion level of lablab was increased in the mixtures. The adjusted-R value for Ca was 0.97 and Phosphorus was 0.85 with the highest values of Ca (0.35%) and P (0.45%) obtained in 70:30 mixed silage compared to other treatments. Therefore, silage mixture of forage sorghum and lablab at 70:30 can be recommended to smallholder crop-livestock farming system in Shika, Northern Guinea Savannah of Nigeria.
