Haematology and Serum Biochemistry of Broiler Chickens Fed Diets with Iburu (Digitaria Iburua) Offal as replacement for Maize
Abstract
Haematological parameters and serum metabolites were determined in 42 days old broilers fed
diets in which their maize content were replaced with iburu (Digitaria iburua) offal in a
completely randomized design. The study was conducted at the Poultry Unit of the Teaching and
Research Farm Federal University of Technology Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria. Six broiler diets
designated T 1 , T 2 , T 3 , T 4 , T 5 and T 6 were formulated such that T1 which served as
control contained 0% IO, while diets T 2 -T 6 had their maize content replaced with IO at 5.0%,
7.5%, 10.0%, 12.5% and 15.0%%, respectively. Only red blood cell count (RBC) of all
haematological variables measured was significantly (P<0.05) influenced by the dietary
treatments. Birds fed T4 had the highest RBC (4.51±0.32mmx10-6) counts; followed by those fed
T3, T5 and T6 (4.38±0.32mmx10-6, 4.47±0.32mmx10-6 and 4.49±0.32mmx10-6 respectively) while
those fed T1 and T2 had the least (3.15±0.32mmx10-6 and 3.25±0.32 mmx10-6, respectively).
Only cholesterol was significantly (P<0.05) influenced by the dietary treatments among the
serum metabolites measured. Birds fed T1 and T2 had higher cholesterol (135.21±0.1313mg/dl
and 135.12±0.1313mg/dl, respectively) levels than those fed T3, T4, T5 and T6
(127.74±0.1313mg/dl, 127.01±0.1313mg/dl, 125.56±0.1313mg/dl and 121.69±0.13mg/dl,
respectively) levels. It can be concluded that the replacement of maize with iburu offal up to
15.00% maize had no deleterious effects on the haematological and serum biochemical indices
viz a vis the health status of broiler broiler chickens.
