Utilization of de-seeded african mesquite (prosopis africana) pod meal by red sokoto bucks: effect on performance and economics of production

Abstract

This study investigated the nutritive potentials of de-seeded African mesquite (Prosopis africana) pod as a feed resource for goats. Twenty-five (25) Red Sokoto Bucks weighing 8.15 kg on average were randomly alloted to five dietary treatments group and each group replicated five times in a Completely Randomized Design. Five diets containing 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 % de-seeded African mesquite meal (DAMPM) were compounded and designated T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5, respectively. Results of performance revealed significant differences (P<0.05) in the dry matter intake (DMI), daily weight gain (DWG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR). Bucks fed diets containing 10 % DAMPM (T2) had higher values of 303.55 g/day, 21.55g/day and 14.08 for DMI, DWG and FCR, respectively. Cost per kg diet and total cost of production was reduce from N158.03 (T1) to N96.62.00 (T5), and N14,679.53 (T1) to N13,950.66 (T5), respectively. Highest benefit per goat (N10,618.70) was accrued from bucks fed diets containing 10 %DAMPM (T2). It was inferred that inclusion of up to 10 % DAMPM in the diets of Red Sokoto goats improved voluntary feed intake, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio and total revenue without posing any serious threat to the animals’ health.
