Abstract

The study was aimed at determining the serological and haematological profile of three strains of laying hen namely Isa brown (IB), Nera black (NB) and Noiler (N). A total of one hundred and thirty-five (135) point of lay birds, forty-five (45) per strain, provided with water and basal diet ad-libitum were used for the study. Blood samples were collected from the brachial vein of ten (10) randomly selected birds, and then analyzed for serological and haematological parameters using standard methods. The result revealed that majority of the serological parameter has the highest concentration recorded in IB (Albumin-Globulin ratio (0.77 g/dl), Aspartate aminotransferase (194.38µ/l), Cholesterol (174.38 mmol/l), Creatinine (0.58 µmol/l, p<0.05), Globulin (3.79 g/dl), Glucose (306.50 mmol/l), Total Protein (6.81 g/dl) and Triglyceride (72.13 mmol/l). Alanine aminotransferase (32.25 µ/l), Alkaline phosphatase (213.75 µ/l) and low-density cholesterol (68.83 mmol/l) in NB while Albumin (3.25 g/dl) and High-density cholesterol (83.45 mmol/l) in N. Haematological parameters has the highest value for Eosinophils (3.25%), Haemoglobin (8.04g/dl), Heterophils (35.25%, p<0.05), Platelet (11.29 x 104 /ml) and Red blood cell (RBC)  (2.35 x 106 /ml) in IB., Lymphocyte (59 %), Monocytes (3.36%), Packed cell volume (PCV) (25.88%, p<0.05) and White blood cell (14.91 x 103 /ml) in NB while basophils (0.35%) in N. In conclusion, there are sero-haematological variations although not remarkable among the strains except for creatinine, Heterophils and PCV.
