Abstract

Haematological parameters are valuable in monitoring feed toxicity, especially, diets that contains ingredients that affect the blood standard ranges as well as the health status of livestock. Therefore, this study evaluated the haematological and serum biochemical indices of West African Dwarf goats fed total mixed rations mash containing graded levels of Enterolobium cyclocarpum seed meal. Five total mixed rations mash (TMRM) containing five inclusion levels (0, 60, 120, 180 and 240 g/kg) of toasted E. cyclocarpum seed meal (TECSM) were compounded. Twenty-five (25) West African Dwarf goats with average weight of 8.31 ± 0.20 kg were divided into 5 groups on weight equalization basis with five replicates. The experiment was divided into haematological and serum biochemical indices. Data obtained were subjected to one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) using SAS software. Significant means were separated using Duncan’s multiple range tests at 5% significance level. According to the results of this study, TMRM containing 180 g/kg TECSM showed increased packed cell volume, haemoglobin and reduced white blood cell. Goats fed TMRM 4 showed increased (p<0.05) packed cell volume (PCV), haemoglobin, neutrophil and monocytes at the final stages. Results showed that TMRM containing 180 g/kg TECSM had the highest (p<0.05) packed cell volume; 33.00%, haemoglobin; 10.36 g/dl,neutrophil; 33.34%, and monocytes; 1.00%. The lowest (P>0.05) PCV (25.33%), haemoglobin (7.50 g/dl) and neutrophil (28.00%) respectively were recorded in TMRM containing 0 g/kg TECSM at the final stage. Goats fed mash with 180 g/kg TECSM had the highest(p<0.05); total protein(6.67 g/dl), globulin (3.67 g/dl) and AST (109.16 u/L)at the final stage while the lowest total protein (6.17) and globulin (2.89 g/dl) respectively were recorded in goats fed mash without TECSM.Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that, TECSM in the total mixed rations mash improved the packed cell volume, haemoglobin and red blood cells of the experimental goats. And 180 g/kg TECSM level of inclusion was recommended for good health of the goats.
