Growth Performance of the F1 of Indigenous and Noiler Chickens in Maiduguri, Nigeria

Abstract

This study was designed to assess the growth performance, the effects of genotype and sex on production of indigenous and Noiler chickens. It was conducted between April, 2021 and March, 2022 on the quantitative traits of four chicken genotypes namely, LL (local x local), NL (Noiler cock x local hen), LN (local cock x Noiler hen) and NN (Noiler x Noiler) at the University of Maiduguri Livestock Teaching and Research Farm. A total of sixty (60) sexually matured chickens of two strains indigenous and Noiler chikens (6 cocks and 24 hens each of Noiler and Nigerian Normal Feathered chickens) were used as the base population for the study.  There was significant effect (P<0.05) of genotype on growth performance. The mean hatch weights were 25.61, 30.0, 34.4 and 36.66 g for LL, NL, LN and NN, respectively. Their corresponding weights at 20 weeks were 1062.2, 1471.8, 1560.7 and 2011.5 g. Genotype NN (Noiler x Noiler) birds had significantly (P<0.05) heaviest body weights at various stages while the lowest were recorded among the LL (local x local) crosses. The reciprocal crosses (NL and LN) were in between. Males had significantly (P<0.05) heavier body weights than females at all ages. Genotype and sex had significant (P<0.05) effects on body weights of chickens. Though production of Noiler, indigenous chickens and their crosses were generally high, more opportunities abound for improvement through selection and better management.
