Haematology and Carcass Characteristics of Broiler Chickens Fed Diets Containing Selected Cereal Brans
Abstract
An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of some selected cereal brans (wheat, maize, rice, millet and sorghum brans) on haematological and carcass characteristics of broiler chickens. Two hundred and twenty five (225) day-old broiler chicks were randomly allotted to five dietary treatments; T1 (WB the control), T2 (MB), T3 (RB), T4 (MilB) and T5 (SB) at 7 % and 15 % inclusion levels for broiler starter and finisher phases respectively. Each treatment was replicated three times (3) with fifteen (15) birds per replicate in a completely randomized design (CRD). The experiment lasted for eight (8) weeks. The result of the haematological analyses showed significant (P<0.05) differences among the parameters investigated with the exception of mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC). All the serum biochemical indices measured were significantly (P<0.05) different among the treatment groups with the exception of blood glucose and alanine amino transferease (ALAT). The results of the carcass characteristics indicated that lungs, intestines, crop and kidney, breast, thighs, drumsticks, wings, back, neck, head, shanks and abdominal fats were significantly (P<0.05) affected by the inclusion of the selected cereal brans.
