Evaluation of Dietary Bitter Melon (Momordica charantia) Leaf Powder as Alternative to Antibiotic Growth Promoters on Haematology, Serum Biochemistry, Carcass and Organ Indices of Broiler Chickens
Abstract
A 56-day experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of Momordica charantia leaf meal (MC) as alternative to Antibiotic Growth Promoters on haematology, serum biochemistry, carcass and organ characteristics of broiler chickens. Five (5) diets, designated as T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5 were formulated. T1 represents the basal diet/control negative, T2 (control positive) contained in addition to the basal diet, 5 g avilamycin/kg, T3 (basal diet + 2g MC/kg), T4 (basal diet + 4g MC/kg), and T5 (basal diet + 6g MC/kg). Three hundred (300) day-old Abor acres broiler chickens were assigned to the five diets in triplicates containing twenty (20) birds each in a completely randomized design. Feed and water were served ad libitum. Data was collected for blood indices, carcass and organ characteristics. Results showed a significant (P<0.05) effect of MC on all haematological and serum biochemical constituents. Packed Cell Volume, RBC, and Hb were higher in birds fed diets T1, T2 and T3 while parameters such as urea, bilirubin and glucose were higher (P<0.05) on T5. Higher than 2 g/kg supplementation of MC (T4, T5), revealed a reduction in live weight, carcass weight and dressing percentage of birds. Therefore, it was concluded that Momordica charantia leaf powder at 2 g/kg feed can replace avilamycin® (Antibiotic growth promoter) in broiler chicken diets without any deleterious effect on blood indices, carcass and organ characteristics.
