Nutrients Digestibility and Nitrogen Utilization of Yankasa Rams Fed Ensiled Crushed Groundnut Shell, African Locust Bean Pulp and Poultry Litter with Various Supplementations
Abstract
An experiment was conducted to evaluate the nutrients digestibility and nitrogen utilization of growing Yankasa rams fed ensiled crushed groundnut shell (GNS), African locust bean pulp (ALBP) and poultry litter with various supplementations. The experiment was conducted at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching and Research Farm, Bauchi. Twenty (20) growing Yankasa rams were used. Five diets plus a basal diet were formulated. The experiment lasted for eighty (80) days in a complete randomized design (CRD) of five treatments with four replications. Data were collected on faecal sample to determine dry matter, crude protein, crude fibre, ether extracts and ash digestibility. Urine sample was collected to evaluate urine nitrogen, total nitrogen output, nitrogen retained and percentage of nitrogen retained. The results showed that, dry matter and crude fibre digestibility were not affected statistically. Crude protein, ether extracts and ash digestibility were significantly (P<0.05) influenced by dietary treatments. All the parameters in nitrogen utilization were significantly (P<0.05) different across the treatment means except that of faecal nitrogen. The Experiment concluded that, ensiled crushed groundnut shell and locust bean pulp with poultry litter fed to Yankasa rams did not affect the nutrients digestibility and nitrogen utilization of the experimental animals. It is recommended that 50% GNS and 30% ALBP should be ensiled with 20% poultry litter waste and fed to Yankasa rams for optimum production especially in dry season feeding. The experiment also recommend further studies using groundnut shell and African locust bean pulp to expand their potentials as feedstuffs.
